We are excited to be part of our local community!
Last year we received funding from Everard’s to get our locals involved and started our LEFREE project. LE3, LE-Free – see what we did there?
Whilst this project has ended, we still want to get involved and be a hub for the creative people of the West End. See below for opportunities and events currently happening!
Do you share our love of the theatre and want to develop that interest further?
We are looking for new Directors to join us in running Leicester’s pub theatre.
Upstairs At The Western is a not-for-profit social enterprise which operates Leicester’s pub theatre above The Western public house on Western Road (just off Narborough Road and the city’s West End). The theatre is separate from the pub, which is an Everards tenancy. The theatre is a small but fully equipped arts space, with 42 raked seats and a 4m x 4m stage, which specialises in small and immersive performances.
We are a receiving theatre, bringing the work of both local artists and national touring companies to stage. We also help emerging artists and theatre companies develop their stage craft and get their first shows to stage. The theatre programs a wide range of genres (ie drama, poetry, comedy, improv, magic and music), prioritising the work of women and non-binary artists across our Spring and Autumn seasons. Our space is also used by artists for workshops and rehearsals.
The theatre is run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, some of whom are also the owners and Directors of the company. We all have a passion for the arts and theatre in particular.
We are looking for new Directors from a wide variety of backgrounds to join us in running the company from January 2023 onwards when some of our current Directors retire. This could include arts practitioners, or people with an interest in backstage, marketing, education, community engagement, administration, etc. Full training will be provided to compliment your personal interest and expertise. We are also interested in existing theatre companies joining our company and taking a residency at the theatre, to use the space to develop, rehearse and produce their own shows.
The time commitment required is a minimum of 3-4 hours per week and is on a voluntary basis. We always have a Director on duty on show nights and share this role between us on an advance booking basis.
If you are interested, please email us in the first instance on firstname.lastname@example.org by 6 November if you can and we’ll get back to you.
Crafternoons At The Western
We have a friendly, local Craft group open to all that runs weekly with afternoon and evening sessions.
Last year we received funding from Everards to run these sessions with local artists. It was a great success and we loved meeting our local crafty crew.
We enjoyed the Crafternoons so much that we decided to carry them on – so join us for the sessions listed below if you’d like to join us!
In Autumn last year we ran five walks around the area led by local artists which gave us a different way to look at the West End.
It was a blast! We’re hoping to run some more in the future so keep an eye out here for further information!
We believe our little pub theatre should be at the heart of our community.
Want some rehearsal space? Want to volunteer? Want to test your new show out? We want to hear from you!
Email us at email@example.com and if we can help, we will!
